Despite good photocatalytic features of these oxides, their application is limited to the ultraviolet (UV) range of sunlight due to their large optical bandgap. This talk briefly explains how application of severe plastic deformation (SPD) to these oxides can reduce their bandgap and activate them under visible light. In particular, laser ablation induced by ultrashort laser pulses is opening up several interesting opportunities in “material processing”. Among the various examples, the direct generation of nanoparticles and the creation of micro- and nano-structured surfaces represent two cases of striking scientific interest which can also lead to diverse important applications.<br /> This presentation will firstly illustrate the basic mechanisms involved in laser ablation triggered by intense, femtosecond laser pulses and the peculiar characteristics of the decomposition processes of the irradiated material occurring at the early stages after the pulse hits the target. Then, the features of the generated blow off of ablated material will be presented addressing the typical characteristics of femtosecond laser produced plasmas and of the generated nanoparticles, and the possibility to elaborate nanoparticles-assembled films.
