Structure and mechanical properties of the hardest vertebrate tissue the teeth
"Teeth, a pervasive feature among vertebrates, exhibit a remarkable diversity in structure, shape, and functionality, particularly in certain clades where exploration remains limited. Comprising two distinct hierarchically arranged tissues—enamel and dentine—with disparities in structure, chemistry, and composition, teeth present a rich avenue for investigation. I will draw upon examples from my research and other pertinent studies to highlight how advancements in imaging techniques, computational modeling, and mechanical testing have recently propelled our comprehension of dental intricacies. Moreover, I will underscore the potential of atom probe tomography (ATP) in unveiling novel perspectives on the biomineralization process within teeth."
